Fitted sheet – what material is best?

Cotton sheets
Cotton sheets are the most popular and most frequently chosen. Cotton fabric perfectly allows air to pass through, wicks away moisture and insulates heat. Cotton sheets are soft, resistant to stretching, durable and provide high comfort of use.
Another advantage of cotton sheets is that they can be washed at 60 degrees, i.e. in conditions that kill all dust mites, bacteria, fungal spores and mould.
Cotton is a natural material of plant origin – gentle on the skin, which makes it an ideal solution for allergy sufferers.
However, it should be remembered that a cotton sheet without any admixtures creases quickly, may roll up during sleep, takes time to dry after washing and this sheet material can be relatively expensive.
Satin sheets
Cotton satin is one of the most popular materials. A satin sheet can be made of cotton or silk. Satin material is created by a special cotton weave – the so-called satin weave. It is shiny on one side, while on the other side the texture is matte. Both polyester and satin sheets are a bit slippery, but satin sheets are pleasant to the body.
Cotton satin is soft and delicate to the touch. Cotton satin sheets provide excellent insulation - in the summer it is not too hot while sleeping and in the winter it is not too cold. Satin bedding does not envelop the body like cotton, but rather flows around it. Cotton satin sheets do not pill, colours do not fade, the material dries quickly and gives the entire bedroom a luxurious character.
Terry sheets
A terry sheet has a very characteristic, looped texture. Terry material is made of cotton. Terry sheets are especially recommended for colder nights, because this material is an ideal heat insulator. However, this material is not only for use in winter - you can also use a terry sheet in summer, because it absorbs excess moisture well. Therefore, this material is especially recommended for people who sweat excessively.
However, due to its rough structure, terry cloth is not liked by many people.
The best jersey sheets are made from Egyptian cotton, the most durable type of cotton. Jersey is made from cotton with much longer fibers than other bedding.
Due to the weave of jersey sheets, we recommend them especially in winter.
Bark sheet
Bark is a material that allows air to pass through well, is flexible and pleasant to the touch. The structure of this fabric makes ironing completely unnecessary. Bark is made of 80% natural cotton yarn and 20% synthetic polyester. The advantages of this fabric also include durability of colors after many washes, quick drying and no pilling.
Velvet sheet
Velour is a material that is extremely pleasant to the touch, fluffy, and at the same time very light. This material can be made entirely of cotton yarn or contain an admixture of synthetic material. Velour is characterized by a slightly frayed texture, somewhat reminiscent of terry cloth.
Polyester sheets
Polyester is a fabric that is easy to keep clean, cheap and very durable. However, a polyester sheet has very poor air permeability, picks up static quickly, does not wick away moisture, which can cause irritation and is not recommended for allergy sufferers.
Synthetic sheet material can cause overheating during sleep, which translates into reduced sleep comfort and the appearance of skin problems.
What should you remember when choosing a sheet material?
When buying a sheet, it is worth paying attention not only to the fabric, but also to the technology of production. Equally important is the grammage, or the number of interwoven fibers per square meter of fabric. The higher the grammage coefficient, the heavier and thicker the sheet. Ideal sheets have a grammage of 200-1000 g/m2.
Fitted sheets are very popular, which makes it easy to put the sheet on the mattress. Additionally, the elastic prevents the fabric from rolling up. Until recently, there was a belief that fitted sheets were unsightly and not very luxurious, but it all depends on the technique and quality of the sheet, and what's more - sheets without an elastic band need to be adjusted more often.
How large a sheet should I choose?
The size of the sheet is important. A sheet that is too small will bunch up and disrupt your sleep, while a sheet that is too large may sag, tangle and stick out unsightly.
How to Choose a Sheet Material – Summary
The choice of sheet material is important for the hygiene and comfort of sleep as well as the aesthetics of the bed.
It is best to choose sheets made of natural material that is breathable, pleasant to the touch, fairly resistant to stretching, provides good thermal insulation, is hypoallergenic and safe for the skin. Cotton is an ideal fabric for both clothing and bedding.
