How to Decorate a Bedroom to Make It Functional and Beautiful

Regardless of whether we plan to furnish the bedroom from scratch or maybe just make a few changes, we should start by carefully planning the appearance and equipment of the room. Let's think about what, apart from the obvious sleep, we will be doing in this room and what colours and interior style are closest to our preferences.

Of course, the size of our bedroom is also important. The amount and size of furniture and accessories should provide comfortable movement and not cause an overwhelming effect. Let's also remember to maintain consistency in the arrangement. Even the prettiest accessories, but improperly combined, can ruin the décor and look kitschy.

The most common mistakes in bedroom design:

  • Lack of coherence, i.e. the selection of random equipment and decorations that do not fit together at all.
  • Too many patterns, e.g. floral wallpaper paired with equally floral curtains and bedding.
  • Focusing solely on visual appeal and forgetting about comfort (and vice versa).
  • Lack of atmospheric decorative lighting.
  • Excessive “clutter” of the bedroom, making it difficult to freely use the bed, wardrobe or chest of drawers.
  • Selection of bright, stimulating colours.
  • Excessive decorative elements.
  • Lack of adequate storage space, resulting in constant mess.

Decorating a Stylish Bedroom - Be sure to pay attention to this!

As mentioned in the introduction, the right arrangement of the bedroom has a key impact on our ability to relax, better quality of sleep and positive well-being. What's more, it has been proven that beautiful, harmonious interiors have a positive effect on us, improving mood and soothing irritation. It is therefore worth ensuring that the interior of the bedroom is cosy, pleasing to the eye and, of course, provides maximum comfort.

Below you will find a list of aspects to consider when arranging the interior of your bedroom:

The best wall and textile colours for the bedroom

It is commonly accepted that in a bedroom you should only focus on light colours for walls and furnishings. This is not entirely true. Yes, light, subdued colours give the impression of cleanliness and optically enlarge the interior, but sometimes they deprive it of character.

As it turns out, a modern bedroom doesn't have to be white or beige, and interior designers boldly offer us deep browns, olive greens, and even... black . Dark colours can even be more conducive to relaxation, creating a pleasant climate and an intimate atmosphere straight from a five-star hotel. Of course, in our bedroom we can choose both light, warm colours and darker colours, depending on our personal preferences. After all, we are the ones who will be staying in this room.

However, when decorating a bedroom, we should definitely avoid bright and garish colours . Sharp yellows, reds, pinks or blues have a stimulating effect, which does not necessarily work in a room intended mainly for sleeping. If we like such colours, let's decide only on minor accents using them.

What furniture to choose for the bedroom?

In every bedroom, the bed is of course the foundation. It is the main piece of furniture, drawing the most attention. It is worth choosing a comfortable mattress and, of course, matching the bed frame to the chosen interior design style, e.g.:

  • a bed with a metal frame will work perfectly in an industrial and loft style;
  • in Scandinavian and classic style, it is best to choose a traditional, wooden bed with a simple form;
  • the glamour style is best emphasized by a royal bed with a high headboard and an upholstered frame, e.g. with velvet fabric;
  • For a rustic-style bedroom, a metal or wicker bed with fanciful shapes will work well.

Of course, a comfortable bed is not the only must-have in the bedroom. You will also need bedside tables on both sides of the bed, on which you can place an alarm clock or glasses, as well as a spacious, large wardrobe (unless you have a dressing room), a chest of drawers for underwear, a corner with a comfortable armchair for reading or a dressing table for ladies who like to do their hair and make-up.

It is worth giving up a desk with a computer or a TV - electronic devices are definitely not conducive to relaxation . Interestingly, interior designers advise against buying all the furniture from one set when arranging a bedroom. On the other hand, equipment that is consistent in style but has individual features will give character.

Stylish textiles

Textiles play a key role in the arrangement of the bedroom, such as soft bedding and sheets, elegant curtains and bedspreads, fluffy carpets or charming decorative pillows. They create a cosy interior, and what's more, they have a direct impact on our comfort.

It is certainly not worth saving on bedding, blankets or carpets. When choosing them, it is worth choosing natural fabrics such as silk and cotton . On the other hand, duvets and pillows filled with natural down provide not only comfortable but also healthy sleep.

According to stylists, in a modern, designer bedroom, regardless of the interior style, bedding looks best in a solid colour or possibly with a small, subtle pattern, e.g. floral. Therefore, if we want an exclusive look, it is better to avoid intensely patterned, colourful bedding straight from the fair .

The “wow” effect can be provided by elegant, heavy curtains reaching to the ground, an unusual carpet, and an interesting wallpaper behind the headboard of the bed. Here we can go for darker colours or a bolder pattern. It is also a good idea to invest in a bedspread in the bedroom and 4-6 decorative pillows, which also looks very stylish.

Cosy bedroom and lighting

A functional bedroom is not only furniture and accessories, but also proper lighting. It is worth planning more than one, main light source. An absolute must-have in a stylish bedroom are tasteful night lamps by the bed, as well as decorative lighting, such as LED strips on the ceiling.

Remember to use a slightly warm main light in the bedroom, ensuring good visibility of all corners of the bedroom and very warm decorative lights . This colour promotes calm and looks very atmospheric. We certainly appreciate decorative lighting during romantic evenings with our significant other.

White light is too close to natural sunlight, which can have a stimulating effect. However, let's completely avoid cool lighting. It is downright irritating.

What decorative accessories and plants will work well in the bedroom?

Once we have furnished the bedroom, the last element is the small accessories that will give it charm and will provide a harmonious finish. These can be:

  • large wall or standing mirror
  • one large painting or two or three smaller ones, referring to the style of the interior
  • designer vase or candlestick
  • decorative tray
  • decorative scented candles in glass or in an interesting shape
  • artificial plant branches (if there is little light in the bedroom)
  • pots with live plants (plants that produce oxygen at night are recommended for bedrooms, including ferns, geraniums, ivies, areca palms, sansevieria)
  • frames with common photos of household members

How to Decorate a Bedroom? – Summary

The right arrangement of the bedroom allows you to create a unique, cosy atmosphere in it while maintaining functionality. It is worth carefully planning the interior design and trying to make all its elements harmoniously work together. In addition to the selection of furniture, aspects such as wall colours, elegant textiles, atmospheric lighting or stylish decorations are also important. In a beautiful, elegant bedroom, it is much easier to relax and in the morning feel a surge of energy for new challenges. To sum up, the arrangement of the bedroom is more than just buying a bed - it is creating a comfortable and intimate relaxation zone, tailored to individual needs and preferences.
